Violence at Work figures are out for 2011
The British Crime Survey has released the results of their findings for 2010/2011 and some of the figures might surprise one or two people!!
Even though they have interviewed a vast amount of people within different sectors, the problem of people not reporting the incidents is still quite alarming and especially here in Northern Ireland; this we have also come across when delivering training in all areas of Workplace Violence.
The point which stood out to me was the information of the males at highest risk was 25 – 34 year old, and the females were older at 55 – 59 year old. It does seem a large gap to me, but then again I would be very interested in researching does these figures really reflect Northern Ireland as the information I have been receiving from both our teams and my own delivery of training is they are at level pegging in respect of receiving threats and the possibilities of an assault.
Another main point which stood out was the 43% of people both assaulted and threatened were repeat victims; so we have to ask is this because their employers have not put in place preventative measures or has the support element failed them. Anyone who has to encounter aggressive situations twice or more is a very serious matter, and this figure to me proves the subject is still not being taken seriously enough.
Finally, the figures of threats towards British Workers is standing at 313,000 and from other reports and information gathered by ourselves this may only reflect a third of the actual number of incidents involved in workplace violence.
We at Quell at the moment are researching the whole area relating to Workplace Violence and how it is being reported and monitored, if you feel you have a point or wish to discuss your sector please do not hesitate to contact us at Quell and we will be happy to chat with you further.
Please find below the link to the HSE Site showing their findings and a graph highlighting the facts.
